There is a lot of confusion around taking calcium. Taking high doses of calcium without any cofactors or supporting nutrients for a long time does have negative side effects. However, not getting enough calcium and other minerals also has negative side effects. It is best to start calculating how much calcium you intake every day from your diet to determine if you are getting enough. Dr. Brown typically recommends getting 800-1,200 mg per day. Many of the clients we see in our practice do not get enough calcium from their diets and need additional supplementation.
